|It has been a real long time since I have done an update in this little diary section. Not much has been going on with my NSR 250 Rothmans bike as I am pretty much happy as it is now. I have done some minor work with new braided lines on front and some pads. Replaced a few more bolts with titanium ones and mostly just having fun riding the bike on weekends with nice weather. Above are some recent pictures of my Rothmans NSR. I have spent the last year or so working on my other NSR project bike which is a 1991 NSR250R SP model. It has been modified a bit and fully derestricted. Here is a sneak preview picture for you below. (This bike may go up for sale cause I have decided to return to school for two more years) If somebody offers me a serious amount of cash I wll sell the below Daijiro Kato replica bike which has lots of brand new parts and some spares such as Magtek wheels and more. |I have been really busy with work and other things and have not had much time to work on my NSR as I had hoped. However I have done a couple of little mods since the last update in my little diary section here. I rebuilt my steering damper and have fitted that again. I changed the brake fluid and added new fitting for the front brake lines which look better than the standard banjo type bolts. The new fittings fit directly into the calipers and don't use banjo bolts for a cleaner look. I had to trim my brake lines a bit, but it was worth it as it looks way better. No real improvement in performance, mostly for looks as the old brake lines and fittings stuck out too much after the RS250 inverted fork conversion. I also have my new Tyga GP seat here and the paint work is all finished. It looks absolutely incredible and I can not wait to install it. More about that soon as I can find some free time. There are still plans for more improvements to my NSR250. I have a few HRC parts on order and want to replace some small parts plus a few more titanium bolts here and there. I am already planning for my MC21 project which is very slowly coming along as well as my little NSR50 mini bike project which I have just done some major upgrades too.|
|Finally got the new stainless JHA RS Force 304 pipes installed this weekend. Had been pretty busy with work drinking parties under the cheery trees and finally got a chance to finish polishing the other pipe up. Both of the pipes turned out really nice and I am glad I did it. Lots of hard work and don't know how they will last but it looks great !! Having beautiful pipes is nice, but the real reason I changed them was for one purpose.....more power. Why not have my bike run on a Dynometer and find out the real facts and figures to know for sure. Got up early on Saturday morning (slight hangover) and had the bike dynoed with the Dog Fight pipes. My NSR setting is completely stock, this is with the stock card, stock carbs, air box, stock filter, stock jetting, everything completely stock and incredibly with an engine that has 50,000 kms and never been rebuilt (knock on wood) with the Dog Fight pipes ONLY and stock setting my NSR made 51.9 HP at 11,200RPM. I was impressed with this as my bike had never had it's top end rebuilt and has lots of miles or kilometers and this was with the fully stock set up and stock card. After removing the the old Dog Fight pipes, cleaning them up a bit and installing the new JHA pipes, installing the JHA special woodruff key and doing a few power checks on the Dyno-meter......I was shocked !! The new JHA pipes made 6.3 HP more than the Dog Fight pipes. To be honest I was expecting maybe one or two horsepower. This was amazing and I was really impressed by these pipes. My NSR put out 58.2 HP at 11,500 RPM with fully stock settings. That is about 18 plus horsepower over stock. Next was a test run, the bike was so much more quieter than the DFR pipes due to the glass wool in the silencers needing a repacking. The new Jha pipes were quiet (don't know how long this will last) and of course they looked great. Went for a few quick test rides and right away noticed a HUGE difference in acceleration and power. I was smiling !! Below are the printouts of the Dyno results that I scanned in. The DFR pipes are still excellent pipes and many people might prefer these over the Jha pipes cause the DFR pipes make more torque where you need it on a street bike in the low and midrange, but if you need the most peak power than you can not go wrong with these new Jha pipes, plus they are stainless !! I will have more pictures of my NSR soon when I get the lower cowl on and a few other parts that I am still waiting on.|

|Spring has finally arrived in Japan and I am busy with work as usual but still try to find time for my favorite pastime which is fixing up my NSR. This time I decided to buy a new set of the latest pipes for sale by JHA. The JHA RS FORCE 304 pipes with Titanium silencers. The price of these pipes was very reasonable (for Japan) and the bodies are made of stainless steel which is a good thing cause I hate rust. The silencers are made from titanium (just the outer shell only) and it includes all the hardware necessary for installation. I was a bit surprised and a little disappointed with the welding on one of the pipes bodies. You can see in the pictures below. The other pipe was fine, but the bad pipe looked pretty bad and I am hoping I can exchange it for a better one. Another thing with the Jha kit is they say these pipes fit both the MC21 and MC28. Instructions for both bikes were included and it included some wire splice parts and instructions for the MC21. The MC28 kit included a Woodruff key (not really sure what this is) but it fits into your flywheel and helps performance greatly according to the instructions. But also said to not use this special Woodruff key with the HRC card. I still haven't installed my HRC card (hopefully soon) so I guess I need to remove that part after I get my HRC card all ready and do the wire splice for my MC28.|
|I also decided to buff the new pipes up to a nice shiny finish. It took me several hours to just finish one pipe, but was actually fun and definitely worth it. I only got to finish one pipe and am hoping to exchange the other poorly welded pipe for a better one. After that I will buff that one too. I am hoping to install these pipes soon and will have more pictures plus dyno chart comparisons of the new Jha pipes and my old Dog Fight pipes. Below are some pictures of the finished single pipe.|
|It has been a while since I have made an entry into this section. The RS front fork version was completed and works wonderful. Lighter weight, bigger brakes, better performance and of course cool looks. The only downside is when it comes to making U-turns or maneuvering at very slow speeds in parking lots due to the shorter turning radius. I have not really done any other modifications to my NSR since the RS forks were installed. I have been really busy and used most of my money during Christmas and the holidays. I purchased an ANTLION billet clutch lever in November and that I must say is really a work of art. A few older rusty nuts, bolts and fasteners were replaced with new ones, a new blue anodized clutch adjuster knob, plus I added a few more titanium bolts to my collection with the front caliper mount bolts and had them safety wired for greater poser value. Future plans will see new pipes and some new bodywork, plus a few other little goodies. Right now it is snowing here in Nagoya, Japan and too cold to ride. It's good for snowboarding, but not good for taking a ride. I am looking forward to installing this clutch-less quickshifting kit from BikeShifter.com, more about that later as the weather gets a bit warmer.|
|Here are a few sample pictures of the RS250 conversion. It is almost finished. Everything is installed, the brakes are incredible and it looks amazing. The only problem I am having now is clearance with the upper cowl stay and the radiator cap. I am in the middle of making up a custom aluminum upper cowl stay to fix one problem, I am still working on the rad cap problem now. Also I need to make some new steering stoppers. It will probably be a few more weeks until everything is perfect and ready to go. I did one short street test ride and it is fine for riding, but U-turns would require some patience.......more later !!|
|Finally I picked up the calipers as modeled above by Buddy the Super Mini Dachshund. These are the racing version of the Brembo 40mm pitch type calipers and are much lighter and stronger than the casting type as used on many Ducati and other performance bikes. The body is a two piece billet body and the pistons are staggered at 34mm and 30mm for maximum efficiency. These calipers are specially made for the Japanese market only and feature full titanium through bolts, titanium quick release pad retainer pins and titanium pistons. The standard racing calipers use steel parts and they rust after a while. These calipers were built in a few numbers and are very limited. Next step will be installation of the RS forks, the brakes and a few other little goodies. The rainy season is now officially over in Japan, but it is blistering hot right now, almost too hot to ride for me and definitely too hot to work on the bike. Also I will be away on business and will not have time to work on the NSR until the end of August......so it looks like the front end should come together in early or middle September. WoW !! I can not wait !! Other than that, nothing much else to report about the NSR. Cheers !!|
|The first of August and the rainy season has finally finished here in Japan. I installed the new stock upper Rothmans cowl and the new Jha RS Force tachometer face plate along with a new carbon look meter cover from Jha. Hopefully I will be picking up my calipers soon and install the RS250 front forks when I get a chance. Now all I need is a new set of Jha pipes to match the new tach face plate.....|
It is now around the end of July and the rainy season has still not finished here in Japan. It seems to rain almost every weekend so I have not really had much of a chance to ride my NSR's. I have finally got my RS250 forks back from Okumura Sculderia. There were some problems with the inner forks that I had Ti-nitrate coated by a company in the US who I will not name. Though the price of the coating was cheap, the quality was not as great as I was expecting. There were imperfections and the tubes would have damaged the new seals so I had to replace the inner tubes and had them Ti-nitrate coated here in Japan by Okumura Sculderia which is Japans top suspension tuner. They did a great job !! They also completely overhauled the RS forks with new custom springs (ME super sport springs) designed for my riding style, weight and to work properly with my NSR. The stock RS250 springs are too hard for a street bike and do not work well with the NSR geometry. Okumura Sculderia also installed their famous ME (Magical Effect) damping tuning kit with their special valves, shims and other parts. The outer tubes were treated to a new type of coating called "KASHIMA" it reduced friction on the inside part of the outer tubes where the top of the inner tubes meet. It also gives my RS forks a very unique look with the bronze coloring. I picked up a new set of fork tops and had Okumura anodize them for me along with a few other parts. The end result is unbelievable. The RS250 forks look awesome !! I am totally pleased with them and Okumura Sculderia was great !! I would highly recommend that shop to anybody.
The next step will be to install the front end on to my NSR. Everything is ready to go except for the calipers. That is right, I still do not have front calipers. I hope to pick them up in the next few weeks. There is a big sale on around that time and have the front end done some time very very soon.
Other new stuff with my NSR......installed a new oil pump this month, the old one had started to leak oil into the case. I know I just needed the seal, but Honda does not sell the seal only. They only sell the complete assembly and besides the shaft was worn a bit too, so I decided on a new pump. Also I picked up a new JHA Tachometer white face plate and a new OEM stock Rothmans upper cowl to replace my slightly cracked old upper.
The Golden Week holidays in Japan have finished and the sun is really shining now, Moto GP was great except for the tragic loss of Daijiro Kato. I took my NSR out last weekend to my favorite riding spot around the Yahagi Dam in Aichi, Japan. The new rear Penske shock is awesome !! It is around the middle of May now. There are a few new things to report about my NSR250R SE.
First thing I finally got my HRC 030 cards. I am so happy about this. I was kind of worried they would not arrive after waiting nearly six months. I still have not done the wire modification. That will happen in the next couple of months or so. Right now the card is sitting proudly on my PC as a decoration. I plan on wiring in a switch so I use both the HRC and stock card freely.
I installed a new speedometer LCD screen on my PGM IV unit. That little part cost over 210 dollars. What a shocker !! But I can finally read my speedo, check on the temp and use the trip odometer. It is definitely a nice change from before when the speedo screen was just black.
Still waiting on my forktops from Tyga Performance, so once those parts arrive I will have the RS forks rebuilt with new springs, seals, and specially valved for me. I finally picked up my RS250 front discs. I decided on the Braking Wave discs. These offer improved performance with lightweight and cool looks. New clip ons from Sansei Racing will be used for the thicker (50mm) RS forks. The billet clamps are made of aluminum and feature a one bolt quick release system, the handle bars themselves are dry carbon bars and weigh practically nothing. The only parts needed to finish the RS250 front end conversion are the front brake calipers. That will be happening soon. I am hoping to have everything done around July or so if I am lucky. The biggest problem for me is finding time right now. After that I will try to get some new pictures up on my Website. I also have a new addition to my NSR family. More on that later.....stay tuned !!
Around the middle of March 2003 now in Japan and the weather has been showing signs of warming up. The cheery blossoms should be blooming in the next few weeks and the start of the Moto GP season will open up on Sunday, April 6th.
I finally installed the rear Penske shock and though I have barely had a chance to really use it, I could still feel a major difference in just riding around town for one Sunday afternoon. I will have a better chance to try it out after the weather warms up a bit.
Still could be a while before I install the RS250 inverted forks. I am kind of busy with work, plus I have still not got the brakes together yet. I still not have decided on what kind of disc rotors I will use, the standard type, Brembo floaters or maybe the wave type rotors. Calipers will definitely be Brembo race spec 4 pots with titanium parts.
Speaking of Titanium, I am really into buying all these cool little titanium bolts for my NSR lately. The difference in weight is amazing. I know they are super expensive, but they just look so cool !!
The next step for my bike will be to install the new one-off carbon kevlar rear fender/hugger. After that I will be installing new clip ons again. Just picked up some carbon fiber one piece clip ons. I am still wondering about bodywork too......I really like the looks of the Silhouette Japan bodywork with the NSR500 style carbon fiber ducts........maybe something in the summer.
Finally my RS forks are being rebuilt now, still waiting on a couple of parts from Matt at Tyga, then they should be ready to go except the brakes. I am having the forks resprung with slightly lighter springs and special valves inside for improved performance. RS250 springs are too hard for a street bike. Okumura racing is handling the rebuild of the front forks. They are Japan's top suspension tuner and set up all kinds of race winning bikes. More later !!

It is now the middle of February, still cold in Japan here, but getting a bit warmer when the sun comes out in the afternoon. My gearbox rebuild is finally finished. I am so happy !! I can not believe the difference. I used a variety of stock MC28 parts, HRC parts and added some cool SPL gearbox parts from i-Factory (I recommend people get these parts when you overhaul your gearbox the next time, not too expensive either)
Other things I am working on now are the front RS250 forks, I got the inner tubes back from MotoMorphic. They did a great job on the ti-nitrate coating. Next step is to rebuild the forks after I get a few parts back from Matt at Tyga and when my new fork seals arrive from HRC. The triples are already to go. I will need to buy new clip ons to fit the bigger inverted forks. Starting to put the brakes together too, probably go with the race spec Brembos with titanium pistons, bolts and pad retainers. Discs will either be Brembo floaters or Wave discs, still undecided.
The HRC 030 mod will be happening soon too I hope. I would like to wire in a switch so I can use both cards and also a digital speedometer from HKS or another car performance company in Japan. Other things I want to fix this winter is a new LCD screen for my PGM IV unit cause the old one is no good at all, I can not see a thing. Also I hope to add new smaller rear turn signals to replace my big stock ugly ones.
Finally I want to install my rear Penske shock. It is just sitting on my PC and looks so beautiful. I will install that together with my new one-off Carbon/Kevlar rear hugger from Magical Racing. I can not wait !!
